Dec 12, 2010 – The Notts Forest BU12 Black Team are the 2010 Presidio Cup Champions! They defeated the Carlsbad Lightning BU12 Black team in the Championship game 6-0. The team competed in the Presidio Cup post-season tournament after having a great Presidio League season, with a record of 9 wins, 2 losses, and 3 ties.
The first round of games were played on the weekend of December 4 & 5 at the John Blanche Memorial Complex in Temecula. Notts Forest was bracketed with Aztecs Fc, TVSC Hawks Red, and Villa FC during group play. The team cruised through group play in dominating fashion, scoring 7 goals while not allowing a single goal. They beat Aztecs 2-0, Hawks 3-0, and Villa FC 2-0, finished top of the group and advanced to the Semi-Finals.
The Semi-Final match was against Bonita Matrix, the winner of the group A bracket. During the match, Notts Forest scored early in the 1st 10 minutes on a break-away goal by their forward. Notts Forest continued to have the better possession in the 1st half. The 2nd half of the semi-final game had Bonita Matrix step up it’s game. They pushed more numbers forward and found an equalizer to tie the game at 1-1. However, Notts Forest responded immediately, scoring 5 min after Bonita Matrix scored to book a place in the Championship Match against Carlsbad Lightning Black, who beat FC Heat Blue in the other semi-final bracket 2-0.
The Championship match of the 2010 Presidio Cup was a re-match of the Rancho Santa Fe Cup Championship match, where Notts Forest defeated Carlsbad Lightning Black previously 4-1. By playing Carlsbad Lightning Black before, the Notts Forest BU12 Black team knew what to expect in the final. Carlsbad was a physical team that had a direct style of play, and Notts Forest was prepared to play them again. Carlsbad Lightning came out strong, having possession in the Notts Forest half for the 1st 10 minutes. However, the Notts Forest defense held up and they caught Carlsbad on a breakaway to score the 1st goal of the match. A through ball up the left side of the field had the Carlsbad right fullback beat. The Notts Forest forward sprinted in behind, crossed the ball early to the other Notts Forest forward to have Notts go up 1-0. After scoring the 1st goal, Notts Forest began to control the game and have the better of possession. With great link up play, they scored their 2nd goal when Notts Forest’s target laid off a ball for their center mid, who made a bursting run into the Carlsbad penalty area and shoot the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0. Notts Forest’s 3rd goal came when their forward won possession deep in the corner of the Carlsbad penalty box, beat a defender and rocketed a shot past the keeper to make it 3-0 at half. Notts Forest would continue to play at a high level in the 2nd half. Their ball movement was very good, and it was hard for Carlsbad to defend. Notts Forest scored 3 more goals in the second half, to put the game out of reach for Carlsbad. They scored their 4th goal from a free kick, their 5th goal from a similar run to how the 3rd goal was scored with the Notts Forest forward beating a Carlsbad defender from the right corner of the penalty box to score, and their final goal from a cross from left forward for the right mid to tap the ball in back post. The game finished 6-0. Notts Forest BU12 Black, Presidio Cup Champions!
“The team really saved their best game of the tournament for the final. They were spectacular in beating a good Carlsbad Lightning Black team 6-0. I’m very happy and proud of them” said Coach Marvin Tarroja after the match. “What a great way to end 2010!”
