August 14, 2011 – The Notts Forest BU10 Black continued their impressive tournament season by finishing as finalists in the Carlsbad Wave Coastal Classic this past weekend. This is the team’s 3rd tournament of the summer and once again, they were able to come away with a medal. The Coastal Classic was a much tougher tournament for the team, since Coach Marvin requested that the team play up at a higher level. The original bracket for the Notts Forest BU10 Black Team consisted of Bonita Matrix and
Carlsbad Lightning White, which were teams that Notts Forest beat in the finals of their previous tournaments. Rather than playing those same teams again, the Notts Forest BU10 Black was put in a higher bracket and matched up with Aztecs FC, Rancho Santa Fe Attack and Carlsbad Wave.
During the group phase, Notts Forest opened against a tough Aztecs FC team. They were physically bigger and stronger than Notts Forest. While Notts Forest competed well with Aztecs, they lost 3-0 due to a few defensive lapses. The second match of the tournament was against Rancho Santa Fe Attack. Notts Forest started the game well and they produced a series of chances on goal with good fast passing combinations. They passed the ball well and were in control of the match taking a 2-0 lead. However, Rancho Santa Fe did not give up and were able to score 2 goals in the final 10 minutes of the game to tie Notts Forest at 2-2.
The last match of group play was against Carlsbad Wave. Notts Forest had previously played this team in a scrimmage and lost 5-2. The team knew that they still had a chance to make finals by beating Carlsbad Wave and were determined to do well. Similarly to the Rancho Santa Fe match, Notts Forest started the game well and was able to take a 1-0 lead. The game was close throughout Notts Forest did well to defend against Carlsbad’s star forward. However, Carlsbad equalized to make the game 1-1. In the last 5
minutes of the game, a beautiful passing combination by Notts Forest right mid, target player and left mid allowed Notts Forest to score the game winning goal and advance to the finals.
Notts Forest played Aztecs FC in the final. Aztecs had control of the game early creating a few chances as Notts Forest could not get out of its half. Luck finally came Aztecs way when a ball that was cleared by Notts Forest’s defense bounced to an Aztec defender, who hit the ball really high in the air and scored over the Notts Forest goalkeeper. It was a lucky shot. Aztecs scored again before the half on a very questionable penalty call. Notts Forest played better during the second half of the game with their
goalkeeper playing very well and the outside midfielders finally starting to create chances. However, Aztecs defense held tough and they won the game 2-0. It was still a good tournament for the Notts Forest BU10 Black Team. It was impressive that they were able to be finalists in a tournament where they had requested to play at a higher level. Good job boys.
