BU10 Red – 2012 Presidents Cup Champions!

January 15, 2012 – The Notts Forest FC BU10 Red Team are 2012 Presidents Cup Champions! Competing in their final tournament before State Cup, the Notts Forest BU10 Red team defeated San Diego Soccer Club Navy BU10, the tournament hosts, 2-0 in a very competitive final. They finished with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss with 7 goals scored and 3 goals against.
Notts Forest played San Diego Soccer Club Navy BU10, Crusaders SC Red BU10 and Carlsbad Wave Blue BU10 in the tournaments 1st 3 games. Their 1st game was against San Diego Soccer Club. Notts Forest started the tournament slowly, and lost their opening game to San Diego Soccer Club Navy 3-2. The second game of the tournament had Notts Forest play Crusaders SC Red later in the day. After the slow start in their 1st game, the team recovered and played much better, defeating Crusaders 2-0. In the 3rd game, Notts Forest faced a very determined Carlsbad Wave Blue team. While Notts Forest had the majority of shots on goal in the game, they eventually scored and defeated Carlsbad Wave Blue 1-0.
After 3 games played, Notts Forest had 2 wins and 1 loss and they were able to advance to the Championship game where they would face a very tough San Diego Soccer Club team again. San Diego Soccer Club was undefeated going into the Championship Match. They had beaten Crusaders 3-2, Notts Forest 3-2, and Encinitas Express 1-0 in their previous 3 games. There was a bit of a friendly rivalry between Notts Forest and San Diego Soccer Club since they’ve both faced each other numerous times in the past in various scrimmages and tournaments. Both teams knew each other well and that only added to the competitiveness of the final. Both teams will also be competing against each other in State Cup later in the year since they are paired with each other in the same bracket.
The Championship Match was much more competitive than the 1st game that the two teams played in group play. Notts Forest learned not to start slow and came out much more determined and focused. Play was even for the 1st 10 minutes of the game, but Notts Forest eventually scored. Notts Forest’s right mid passed a square ball to Notts Forest’s center mid, who switched the ball to the back post to find Notts Forest’s wide open left midfielder. Notts Forest’s left midfielder collected the pass from center midfield, which was slightly behind him, turned and unleashed an amazing shot that went in the lower right corner of the goal. With Notts Forest up 1-0, San Diego Soccer Club stepped up their play and had a barrage of shots on Notts Forest’s goal. 3 shots from San Diego Soccer Club hit the post of Notts Forest goal in a span of 5 minutes! With some determined defending and some excellent goalkeeping, Notts Forest was able to withstand the storm and lead at the half 1-0. At halftime, Coach Marvin praised the team for their strong start, but cautioned that the game was not over. He warned that if they allowed San Diego Soccer Club to shoot as much as they did again, they would not hit the post. The team kept up its energy into the second half and scored again. Pressure from Notts Forest’s forward and right midfielder on San Diego Soccer Club’s defenders caused them to win the ball near San Diego Soccer Club’s goal. A pass from Notts Forest’s right mid found Notts Forest’s left mid who made a clever run back post to score and make the game 2-0. Notts Forest’s defense held firm and they were able to shut out a very talented San Diego Soccer Club offense and win the 2012 President’s Cup Tournament 2-0! After starting the tournament with a 3-2 loss, Notts Forest finished impressively, winning 3 straight games with 3 straight shutouts. Notts Forest FC BU10 Red – 2012 President’s Cup Champions!
